It was the crash of David Salom that resulted in last weekend’s first Imola World Superbike race being stopped.

The Team Pedercini rider lost control of his Kawasaki at the Rivazza section, the Mallorcan being thrown off his motorcycle. This left him with a fractured left wrist and bruised elbow, preventing any appearance in the afternoon’s second race.

“The weekend has not gone as expected,” team owner Lucio Pedercini declared. “We had worked hard for the race, but early on David had some contact with Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team); Badovini had gone deep into the last chicane and this resulted in a loss of positions. Then a technical problem meant David’s third gear locked up and he came off the bike as a result.”

Confirming his rider’s injuries, Pedercini added:

“He has suffered a small fracture to his left wrist. However, the main problem is the left elbow which has been affected by heavy contusions in that area. Hopefully he will be fit to ride in the next round at Donington Park in two weekends’ time.”

Imola was not the first time Salom had missed a World Superbike race this year. The Spaniard was also on the sidelines for both of Phillip Island’s season-opening encounters following a heavy crash in Tissot Superpole 2.
